It's the summer holidays, so this week's update is a bit lighter on the wise words. Instead, I’ve kept things simple with a simple dose of Sunday creative inspiration to spark your imagination for the week ahead.
My highlight of the week was a trip to London to see Matilda with Daisy and the hubby. What a show!
Have an inspired week ahead
💫 Inspiration to draw on this week:
🖍️ Get creative with Calligraphr
I’ve been having fun making fonts from my handwriting with the online tool Calligraphr. I learned about this tool from Liz Fosslien, visual communicator extraordinaire.
All you need is a printer, a pen, a scanner/or your phone, and it does the rest for you. I used my personal font for the text on an illustrated quote I shared here a couple of weeks ago. The free version allows you to create one font, but if you’re unhappy with it, delete it and try again. Tag me on Notes or in the comments with your creations.
🎵 Music to move your pencil to: 🎹 The Duchess - Piano Suite by Rachel Portman
One day, I’ll draw a piece of music by Rachel Portman because her music is so wonderfully evocative and gives me goosebumps. Allow your pencil to move and flow with this beautiful track: The Duchess: Piano Suite by Rachel Portman
✍🏻 Reading recommendation: 7 attitudes to elevate your creative practice
Discover how Jon Kabat-Zinn's 7 attitudes of mindfulness can help you break free of creative boundaries, release judgment, and fully embrace your unique artistic self.
Try to let go and observe your mind pushing, grasping, judging, expecting, etc. Let go of your preconceived ideas of good or bad; let go of the messages you were told as a kid that creativity is an indulgence. Let them pass like floating clouds and make your work anyway. Live your life according to your tune, not someone else’s.
🌟💩 Good news break: a load of glittery crap
I just had to share this story about human creativity because, let's be honest, we don’t always get it right.
Last week, the London Museum (formerly the Museum of London) unveiled a new logo to accompany its new name. And it certainly made a splat…
Yes, it’s a clay pigeon pooing glitter 🤭 The pigeon itself is cast from London clay, while its splat is rendered in glitter. Here’s the PR department's arty explanation:
“The pigeon and splat speak to a historic place full of dualities, a place where grit and glitter have existed side by side for millennia.”
Is this new logo a stroke of creative genius or a pretentious artistic disaster? I’ll let you make up your own mind!
💬 And finally…a quote to live by
“It’s a simple and generous rule of life that whatever you practice you will improve at.”
