Jo, this means a lot. That "system I'm not sure I chose" line is exactly it — most of us didn't sign up; we just found ourselves inside it and started performing like it was optional. Here's to our fifties being the decade we stop asking permission xx
I think so many people can relate to this. I deleted instagram from my phone as I was creating for yen algorithm with terrible results. Both in terms of views and in terms of my creative integrity. It feels very transgressive to create for the sake of creating - not to make money, not to heal, not to teach, not to connect to community, but because you simply have a desire to engage in the creative process. Wild!
Yes, Kat! "transgressive" is exactly the word. It says a lot about where we've landed that just making something because you want to has become a radical act. Deleting Instagram over it is the kind of decision I respect enormously (I regularly take extended breaks and have learnt not to get too hung up on it when I am using it) — that's choosing your own creative integrity over the algorithm's approval, which is brilliant!
