Last week, I shared everything I’ve learned about intentional productivity in my previous post. After years as a productivity coach, I’ve realised that true progress isn’t about doing more; it’s about focusing on what truly matters. One of my favourite tools for staying motivated and overcoming doubt is the 5 Whys exercise. It’s an exercise that keeps me personally motivated and helps me fend off self-doubt or loss of motivation.
Today, I’m delving deeper into this game-changing technique and demonstrating exactly how to use it.
How to Use the 5 Whys for Intentional Productivity
The 5 Whys is a simple yet powerful tool for overcoming doubt and uncovering your intrinsic motivation when confidence wanes, or you question your purpose. Initially developed by Toyota and popularised by Simon Sinek, it helps you dig deeper than surface-level challenges and reconnect with what truly matters to you.
How it works:
1️⃣ Start with a challenge or goal. What’s something you’re struggling with in your productivity or creative work? Example: “I want to create a website to sell my art.”
2️⃣ Ask ‘Why?’ five times. Each answer should lead you deeper into the real issue.
Why do I want to create a website to sell my art?
→ Because I want a dedicated space to showcase and sell my work on my own terms.
Why?
→ Because relying only on social media or third-party platforms feels limiting and unpredictable.
Why?
→ Because I want to build a brand and business that reflects my values, style, and creative vision.
Why?
→ Because I want my art to reach the right people—those who truly connect with it.
Why?
→ Because selling my art isn’t just about making money—it’s about sharing something meaningful and building a sustainable, creative life.
3️⃣ Now, use your final answer to guide intentional action and, most importantly, to anchor yourself when things get tough, motivation dips, or doubt creeps in.
In my example from doing this exercise, I see a deeper purpose, so I can build my website with intention, knowing it’s not just a shop but a space to share my art and connect with the right people.
I shall write the final sentence out and place it next to my desk to remind me why I’m pursuing the website and this new path I find myself on.
Over to you
This method helps shift from mindless productivity to intentional productivity—where you focus on what truly matters. ✨
Give it a try, and let me know in the comments how you get on, what you discover, and if there are any unexpected surprises.
I'll be back on Sunday to share an update on my first month in this new chapter of my life after redundancy and leaving my job. I can’t wait to reflect on the journey so far with you!
🎨 See you Sunday!
